Screen Time Cost Calculator: How Many Hours a Year Is Your Phone Taking?
Screen time cost calculator
See what your daily phone time adds up to over a week, a year and the next ten years. Free, nothing is saved.
On iPhone: Settings, Screen Time, See All App & Website Activity shows your real daily average.
How to read the result
The calculator multiplies your daily screen time by 7, by 365 and by 3,650. It is simple arithmetic, so the result is only as good as the number you enter. Use the daily average from your phone's own Screen Time report rather than a guess; most people underestimate it.
Not all screen time is wasted. Messages to family, maps, work and reading count too. The useful question is how much of the total is time you did not mean to spend, and that is the part worth winning back.
Five ways to win back the minutes
- Find the two worst apps. In Screen Time, the top two apps usually account for most of the total. Start there instead of trying to cut everything.
- Add friction, not bans. A short pause before an app opens breaks the automatic tap. Total bans tend to get switched off.
- Give each visit a length. Deciding on 10 minutes before opening an app ends most of the "just one more scroll" loops.
- Move the apps off your home screen. Searching for an app is slower than tapping a familiar icon, and that delay helps.
- Protect the first and last hour. Leaving the phone outside the bedroom removes the morning check and the late-night scroll.
Frequently asked questions
How much screen time is normal?
There is no single healthy number for adults. Comparing yourself with last month, and with the time you intended to spend, is more useful than comparing with an average.
Does Apple's Screen Time limit actually work?
It helps, but many people tap Ignore Limit out of habit. Tools that add a deliberate choice before the app opens tend to hold up better.
What is FocusPass?
FocusPass is an iPhone app blocker from the makers of this page. It shields the apps you choose with Apple's Screen Time system; when you need one, you take a short Pass (for example 5, 10 or 15 minutes) and the app relocks on its own when time is up. FocusPass on the App Store.
The calculator is arithmetic only and stores nothing. Disclosure: this page is published by the makers of FocusPass.
